How long do Old Man Emu (OME) shocks last?Updated 3 months ago

In normal use, Old Man Emu shocks typically last around 80,000 to 100,000 miles.

They’re also backed by a warranty of at least 3 years or 60,000 km, depending on the specific product.

What can make them wear out faster (or last longer)?

Even with a strong baseline lifespan, real-world longevity depends on a few big factors:

  • How much you drive: More miles = more wear and stress on the shocks.

  • Maintenance and install quality: Using genuine parts and doing routine check-ups helps prevent premature wear.

  • Terrain and environment: Rough terrain (rock, sand, etc.) accelerates wear on any shock.

  • Vehicle weight: Heavier builds and constant load demand more suspension travel and can shorten shock life.

  • Tire condition: Worn tires can speed up shock wear, so staying on top of tires helps protect your suspension.

When should you replace OME shocks?

Watch for these common signs that it’s time:

  • Vibrations in the steering wheel or seat, especially over bumps

  • Leaks (slow seep or obvious fluid loss)

  • A bouncy, unstable ride—especially on rough roads

  • Loss of control/traction, where the shocks aren’t keeping the tires planted like they should

Bottom line

A realistic expectation is 80k–100k miles, then adjust based on how hard the truck is used, how much weight it carries, and how rough the terrain is. If you’re noticing vibration, leaks, excessive bounce, or reduced control, it’s a strong sign your shocks are due.
